BIOGRAPHY
- Philippe Lussan
Frenchman Philippe Lussan
was brought up listening to a diet of Classical music and World music from a
very early age, his father himself passionate about music travelled several
times a month to Africa, the Middle East and South America for his work and
brought back a wide range of music. Subsequently, Philippe started Piano at
the age of 11, later on as he reached his late teens he developed a passion
for synthesizers. This led him into the recording world with a first jazz funk
pop album ‘the Book of Love’ in 1987 with his band Cocktail, whilst he was on
a degree course in International Business Administration at the European Business
School in London.
After graduating from EBS
in 1990, he decided to pursue his interest in music and went on to study Sound
Engineering at the School of Audio Engineering in London.
After graduating from SAE,
he worked on musical compositions for the fashion industry. In 1992 he met with
British DJ the Rhythm Doctor, they teamed up as WAVE and their first release
‘Enjoy Life’ on New York record label Eight Ball reached number 10 in the Billboard’s
Dance Chart in April 1993, and remained in the chart for thirteen weeks.
Building on that success,
Philippe and Rhythm Dr together decided to set up in 1993 MAMA RECORDS with
a desire to push a more musical side into Dance music. More than 64 tracks were
produced over sixteen vinyl EP releases, with tracks picked up for several compilations
by the likes of MINISTRY OF SOUND (Harvey’s Late Night Session), BBE (Mad Styles
and Crazy Visions mixed by Little Louie Vega), ARCADE (Serious Clubhits 3),
BMG (Queen Club Paris vol. 2), King Street (Abstract Afro II).
In 1997 Rhythm Dr moved
to Scandinavia and they decided to give Mama a rest. As a consequence early
in 1998 Philippe set up on his own a new label INVINCIS, with a desire to reconcile
both his musician side together with his more electronica orientated production
techniques, as well as seeking the cooperation of like minded artists and producers.
The first project released was Choc Electrique feat. Pascal’s Bongo Massive.
So far there has been 14 releases on Invincis and its roaster also includes
And If, Lussan & Shukie, Karmastry and Bubble Factory.
Going beyond the DJ market
many of the Invincis Releases can also be heard on CD compilations such as NIRVANA LOUNGE 3 (Chall'O Music), BUDDHA BAR-SIDDHARTA 2 (George V Records), DANCEFLOOR
FG01 (Universal, France), BEDROCK 03 (Pioneer, USA/UK), QUEEN CLUB PARIS Vol
5 (Inca/EMI, France), Australian MARDI GRAS (Zomba, Australia), PRIVILEGE IBIZA
(Vale Music, Spain).
Philippe has also done several
Dance remixes for other labels. Amongst them he remixed for Richard Dorfmeister’s
Tosca project the track ‘Busenfreund’ on the album ‘Suzuki in Dub’ (G-Stone),
for A Man Called Adam, Maria Naylor ‘I am the best’ (Other) and for Mama Kabbala
‘Ashewo Ara’ (Mama).
As an engineer programmer,
he engineered projects for Polygram, Sony, Frankie Valentine, Tresor and a variety
of non Dance related artist or filmmakers.
